Devotional 

The benefit of faith, in the Son of God, to overcome the world. You might look at your life and think you are a failure, but that is a lie. Every day when you get out of bed and face the world you are an overcomer. It doesn't matter how many times you've failed or fallen, who hasn't? The truth is you are getting better in your struggles, you defeat the enemy you triumph over adversities and become a little stronger each time. Lift up your head, thank God for the strength that He has given you through Jesus which enables you to overcome the world.

God Will Deal with Our Enemies

We all have enemies, and our natural instinct is to seek revenge against them. But God promises to deal with our enemies and bless us if we will wait on Him and not try to take matters into our own hands. In today’s scripture, God is speaking about David’s enemies and says He will clothe them with shame.

God tells us to forgive our enemies, to bless them, and to pray for them—and this is exactly what we should do. Just this week, someone hurt me and falsely accused me, and I have been praying for that person every day and sometimes twice a day. I would much rather have God’s justice than my own.

I encourage you to follow Jesus’ commands in this area. Love your enemies and do good to them (see Matthew 5:44; Luke 6:27). Don’t stoop to their level by trying to get them back. God will be your Vindicator. He will defend you, bless you, and exalt you.

Prayer of the Day: Father, I want to live my life according to Your will. At times, it is hard for me to wait on You, especially in the area of dealing with my enemies. Help me to obey You. Help me to forgive, bless, and pray for those who hurt me. Thank You.

TODAY’S VERSE

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Some thoughts are so powerful, they can change your life. Or at least they should. This passage is that way. If you can read, “He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing” and not feel special, not feel like God adores you, not be moved to gratitude and thankfulness for His attention toward you, then you need to read it again. If you can read, “The Lord your God is with you, He is mighty to save you” and not feel secure, special and in a safe place, then you need to stop, ask God to speak to your heart, and read this verse over. Today’s verse can change your life, if you let it.

TODAY’S PRAYER

Who am I, Dear God, that You would shower me with such attention? And yet, even with my doubt and feeble faith, today I choose to believe You. I choose to believe that I am a delight to You and that You rejoice over me. Quiet my heart with Your love, help me see with my imagination Your smile of acceptance and sense Your warm embrace of love and hear my name in Your singing. In Jesus’ name.

Love Your Enemies

I think this is one of the few times I question God's ways.

To live our enemies is crazy thinking. But since I love the One who created me, then I got to make this a priority.

“Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” (Matthew 5:44)

Prayer for your enemies is one of the deepest forms of love, because it means that you have to really want that something good happen to them.

You might do nice things for your enemy without any genuine desire that things go well with them. But prayer for them is in the presence of God who knows your heart, and prayer is interceding with God on their behalf.

It may be for their conversion. It may be for their repentance. It may be that they would be awakened to the enmity in their hearts. It may be that they will be stopped in their downward spiral of sin, even if it takes disease or calamity to do it. But the prayer Jesus has in mind here is always for their good.

This is what Jesus did as he hung on the cross:

Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. (Luke 23:34)

And it’s what Stephen did as he was being stoned:

Falling to his knees he cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them!” (Acts 7:60)

Jesus is calling us not just to do good things for our enemy, like greeting them and helping supply their needs (Matthew 5:47); he is also calling us to desire their best, and to express those desires in prayers, even when the enemy is nowhere around.

Our hearts should desire their salvation and desire their presence in heaven with us and desire their eternal happiness. May God give us grace to pray like the apostle Paul for the Jewish people, many of whom made life very hard for Paul:

My heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. (Romans 10:1)

Several Years Ago

Thought provoking little devotional. I found it encouraging. My prayer is you will too.

Several years ago, we brought home an adult black cat named Juno from the local animal shelter. Truthfully, I only wanted help thinning our mice population, but the rest of the family wanted a pet. The shelter gave us rigorous instructions on how to establish a feeding routine that first week so Juno would learn our house was his home, the place he belonged and where he’d always have food and safety. This way, even if Juno might roam, he would always eventually come home.

If we don’t know our true home, we’re forever tempted to roam in vain search for goodness, love, and meaning. If we want to find our true life, however, Jesus said, “Abide in me” (John 15:4 esv

). Biblical scholar Frederick Dale Bruner highlights how abide (like a similar word abode) evokes a sense of family and home. So Bruner translates Jesus’ words this way: “Stay at home in me.”

To drive this idea home, Jesus used the illustration of branches attached to a vine. Branches, if they want to live, must always stay at home, tenaciously fixed (abiding) where they belong.

There are many voices beckoning us with hollow promises to fix our problems or provide us some new “wisdom” or exhilarating future. But if we’re to truly live, we must remain in Jesus. We must stay at home.

Insight

One of the central emphases of the gospel of John is on the incarnation—God becoming human to be with us (John 1:14)—as a gift of God’s love (3:16–17).  

While church tradition and other evidence suggests John the disciple was likely the author of this gospel, the author is intentional about being identified only as someone “whom Jesus loved” (21:20), whose testimony is trustworthy (v. 24). What’s most important is that the gospel points us to Jesus as the One through whom we can rest in God’s love (15:9).
