GOD’S WORD: LOST AND FOUND
on
Scripture Reading: 2 Kings 22:1-13
Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the secretary, “I have found the Book of the Law in the temple of the LORD.”
—2 Kings 22:8
Josiah became king of Judah at the age of eight. His grandfather Manasseh had been evil, filling the land with idols and desecrating the temple of God in Jerusalem. His father Amon had been so evil that his own servants had rebelled and killed him. It may surprise us Josiah wanted anything to do with God. But at the age of sixteen his heart was turned to the Lord, and he began a spiritual reformation among his people. When he was twenty-six, he had repairs begin on the temple, which had been neglected for about eighty years.
The workmen found a book while they were repairing and cleaning the temple. It included the five books of Moses and other inspired writings. The high priest realized its importance as “the Book of the Law” and brought it to the attention of the king. How could it have been forgotten? A copy of God’s Word was to be in the king’s possession and read by the king “all the days of his life” (Deuteronomy 17:18-20). But it had been set aside by those who wanted nothing to do with the holy God.
Where is your Bible? Is it forgotten and tucked away somewhere in your home? Neglecting God’s Word opens an invitation for serious evil to enter your life and for sinful idols to replace the almighty God in your desires.
Prayer:
“I remember, LORD, your ancient laws, and I find comfort in them. Indignation grips me because of the wicked, who have forsaken your law” (Psalm 119:52-53). Amen.
